Here is my picture couertesy of Lyn Licciardello. I had an OK run except had to stop on Heartbreak hill for a 5 star bathroom break. Cost me over 5 minutes as there was a line for use. My splits were:

Ashland to Boston

On Saturday it was a picture perfect to run so I headed out to Hopkinton there were hundreds of others with the same idea as there was a steady stream of runners from the start all the way in as I drove the course until Heartbreak Hill.

I park near the train station in Newton and headed out to Ashland. I got to the above sign about near 11:50 am by this time there were only a handful of runners.

I made it to Wellesly Free Library, just after 10 miles for me, in 90 min. I had a quart of Gatorade for my water stop. On to Newton and the "Hill" and made it to the sign that welcomes you to Boston in under 3 hours. I went as far as Cleavand Circle then back to the car in just under 4 hours in total the loop not bad considering the 2 breaks and getting lost on the way back to car added at least 1 mile to my 24 mile planned run.

Sunday New Bedford 1/2 Marathon

Have to thank Jim Johnson, who did not race today because of injury, for all pictures of me from New Bedford. He sent them with a note that I was over dressed. I was just happy to be running it at all as our driver of car pool was no where to be found 20 minutes before race and he strolls back to car and he says whats the hurry we got hour+. He did not spring ahead his running watch. Doh.

The race for me was OK as still nursing a slight hamstring and tender knee from last weeks 60 miles. Splits were 7:45, 8:00, 8:15, 8, 7:45,7:45, 7:45, 7:45, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8:25 for last 1.1 for a time of 1:43:25, 15 minutes 1 second better than last year. I was 845/1951 runners,89/157 in my age group.

The race was won by the PAT TARPY the same winner as the 10 miler last month at the Jones in Amherst.

The good news for me was able to "win" carpool race so to speak as I beat my 2 fellow group C runners: I caught George at final hill was somewhat surprised since his prerace estimate was 1:35 whereas mine was 1:45. Jeff was never in the running as he pulled his hamstring doing track less than 2 weeks ago (He did it the same way I did trying to do fast laps on that tiny indoor oval at AHS).

Afterwards ate and headed back to Andover. Picked up car and rested until went to BSC for a swin workout at 8pm did 1.5 miles in 55 minutes.

Then when I got home did something that really might come back and bite me as I signed up for the Mount Washington Lottery. I must still be on that high, I am going to have nightmares about: "it is only 1 hill".

This week was on Easy Street

I took this picture last Sunday during the run around Salem N.H. and did not realise how appropriate it would ably to this week after last weeks 60+ miles I did go to The Sports Spa in Woburn, MA to get a great massage from Mike Toomey. After that I literally was on Easy Street the rest of week on Tuesday night was last indoor track session at AHS. So even tho was a little sore from both the high mileage and the once over by Mike. I waddled tru 6 Miles in 60 min. Not going to but the workout down since I was back of my last years Group H running about 8min/mile pace. Wednesday was a short jog of 5 miles in 50 min. Thursday did get back on the mill for 10 miles in 80 min. Friday did a 2 mile swim in 80 min. plus hit the StairMaster for 8 miles in 70 min. Today easy 3 miles in am. followed by a strength/core workout in the pm and 5 miles in 40 min. on the StairMaster.

So, that is all there is here on "Easy Street".

MM2

Week 12 Recap

Monday - bike 1 hours, swim 1 mile 40 min.
Sunday - 12 miles - 2 hours, swim 2 miles in 1:15
Saturday - long run 20.2 miles in 2 hours 50 min.
Friday - 11 miles - 92 min. swim 1.5 miles 60 min.

Lots of miles this week

Today was beautiful near 60 degrees so I headed out in shorts to Lowell and did the 10.1 mile loop from the Baystate marathon twice 2:50. Started first 5 miles in 40 min. next 5 in 41, next 5 in 45 next 3 in 24 and stopped for a pit stop at 18 miles in 2:30 and slow jog after the pit stop to bring it home.

Friday did a swim for 2 miles in 1:15. Strength training, then did 11 miles on the StairMaster in 92min.

Thursday did a swim for 1 mile in 40 min., bike 1:10 for 22 miles, jog 2 miles in 20.

Wednesday got a quick strength train then 6 miles in 45 minutes.

Tuesday I did the speed workout on the treadmill to lessen the chance for injury.
I found a good workout online from runners world which had me doing 3x 2 mile repeats with 1/2 mile jog in between, I started at 8min/mile for the first set and got down to 7:30/mile for the final set and the best thing was there was very little pain in any parts of my legs. 10 miles in 80 minutes.

I am almost to 50 miles already this week and there is a hosted run tomorrow in Salem, NH. I am planning on going if I can bet up early enough with the DST starting tonight and losing an hour. Oh well it will be great having sunshine till 7pm time to get the bike out of mothballs.

Sunday Claddagh Pub 4-Mile Classic Road Race

Got to this race today with about 1 hour to start.
Grabbed a # and shirt and went back to car trying to figure out what to where on both my feet and shirt, as it had started snowing on the way to Lawrence. I decided against racing flats after my pains of last weeks race and went with the NB 903. I went with a sweatshirt over 3 layers just to be safe as no way was going to break 30 min.today.

I got to the start after 1 mile jog to start and the race went off promptly at 11am. I started 1/2 way back seeding myself where I usually do but was surrounded by way too many people of different racing abilities. Which got me to the first mile in 8:30. The second mile is up 2 hills the first is easy enough but the second just before mile 2 was snow covered and a little slick. Mile 2 was another 8:30 at least there was reason for that one the next mile was all down hill in 7 flat(flying for me) and finished with a 7:19 last mile for a 31:19 for a 109th place finish out of a field of 742. Results
Mario Faraioli beat Jim Johnson by 1 second.

The picture here is at the Pub with Jim J on the left and Michael Quintal on the right of the winner. I did not know Michael and asked him if was DD he took it as a compliment but my appologies to both. He said the time for this race was about the same as last week thru 4 miles so I do not feel so bad about my time as last week was over 33 thru 4.

I did get a 2 mile cooldown in to bring the weekly total over 50.

The past 5 days

This week was hurting allot from the choice I made in running shoes for the race on Sunday. At least I hope that is what the problem was.

Luckily the coach gave a very light workout Tuesday for those who raced.
The workout: (track I run at is 11 laps to the mile)

1. Warm-up 1 mile.
2. 22x1 lap at 36sec.
3. 1 lap jog after every lap.
4. 1 mile in 9:00 cool down.
6 miles in 60 min.

And I could barely finish because of the pain in the front of both my knees.

Wednesday was able to do 8 miles in 72 min. after a 2 mile swim in 1:20

Thursday was a 1.5 mile swim in 55 min. Bike 45 min. 2 mile jog in 10 min.

Friday was 2 mile swim in 1:25 then 8 miles in 64 min.

Today was a long run indoors to lessen the pounding on the still tender knees got started at noon went to 3pm for a total of 20 miles.

Sunday Jones Group Realtors 10 Mile Road Race

Today was a long day that was supposed to include a long run.
I started at 6am meeting with some friends before going to meet my teammates in Chelmsford, MA to carpool to Amherst, MA.

I was the first to arrive followed closely by George and Henry.
Off we headed to Jones Group Realtors 10 Mile Road Race.
We arrived at 9:30 got our numbers and I did 3 miles as I was looking to do 16-18. But the hamstring was not quite right so I re wrapped the leg and decided to take some Vitamin I for the expected pain.

The race went off just after 11 luckily there was a gun blast as there were no instructions heard. This was a rather hilly course but was not as bad as I feared.

My splits were 8:20, 7:55, 7:50, 9:10(only real tough hill), 7:50, 7:45, 7:40, 7:45, 7:50, last mile(had to be wrong) 7:22 to finished in 1:19:17 for a 7:56/mile pace and a PR by over 10 minutes. And the conditions were ice covered dirt roads in spots mile 4-6 especially. But the weather stayed dry until about noon and was mostly light until I finished.

Patrick Tarpy won in 49:51. Results.

There were no pictures(found this one from Robyn Pringle whose husband Roger ran his first ever 10 mile race) because I did not take any not realizing it until 1/2 way back home. The ride back was quite interesting as the rain changed to snow as we climbed out of the valley we were in. The surrounding hills were snow covered and slick. Many cars off the road until we got to past Fitchburg, MA.

Past few Days

On Thursday I did get a 6 mile run in 50 minutes on the stairmaster. Also did some strength and swam 1 mile in 40 minutes.

On Friday started in the pool and did 1 mile in 33 minutes first time able to keep pace under 1 min/50yards. My hamstring is still not 100% so I went with the bike for1/2 hour did the treadmill for 2 miles in 16 minutes the back to bike for 1 hour.

Today I did 1 hour on the bike a brisk 19 miles then swam after always a risk but the pool was closed when I first got there for a party. Did 1/2 mile in 16 minutes and should of stopped there because thats when the cramps came calling but I finished after walking out cramp a bad 1 mile in 40 minutes. Only good news of the day was weight was 166 at start of day. Have not been this light since I was a teenager.

Treadmill workout

This is vacation week so no indoor track this week so I delayed doing a speed workout on Tuesday did 9 miles in 80 minutes.

Then on Wednesday I was supposed to this 7 minute workout 6-7 times:
1 minute at 6:20 mile pace
1 minute at 7:30 mile pace
1 minute at 6:20 mile pace
1 minute at 7:30 mile pace
1 minute at 6:20 mile pace
2 minutes jog

I did it for 3 times and my left hamstring started giving me a little pain during the faster pace so I went with the slower pace for 2 miles to finish up the workout.
Ended up being 9 miles in 72 minutes.

Not sure what today will bring as I am headed to BSC now and still a slight pain so I will start today in the pool and do some strength and core.

Sunday Long Run

Today there was a hosted run in Andover, MA it started at the local Masonic Lodge.
I ran with a group that ran South on Main Street which was simple eneough since it is well marked with mile markers every mile. So I ran until got past this sign entering Reading, MA. I went 1 mile in and turned around I made the 16 mile loop in j2:20. Really was pretty good no real issues except the wind was brisk once I headed back north was wondering why it seemed so easy doing mostly 8min/mile going south and was a struggle to keep under 9min/mile going north.

I did get to BSC on both Friday and Saturday. Doing 6 miles and 3 miles. Also swam 4 miles total for the week with Saturday being the best yet with 2 miles in 75 minutes.

Thursday - Feeling Better

It has been a tough 10 days or so of not too much in the way of a quality workout.
Tuesdays track was good to get back to running with no pain in the hamstring. the workout was a simple one. The workout: (track I run at is 11 laps to the mile)

1. Warm-up 3 miles.
2. 12x3 laps at 38/36/34.
3. 1/2 lap walk and 1 lap jog after every 3 laps.
4. 1 mile in 9:00 cool down.

9 miles in 80 minutes of running.

I did have to modify my workout as Group C workout was 36/34/32 or tad faster.
This being my first speed workout in 3 weeks and the last time I went that fast is when I hurt my hamstring. So I was not going to do that speed until it gets warmer.

Wednesday I had a late night of work and had to go to meet some friends until 9pm.
Decided to play it safe and take a rest day.

Today was back to BSC for my first workout there in almost 2 weeks. I started in the weight room for an hour of mostly light weights and core. Then I hit the StairMaster for an encouraging 6.2 miles in 42 minutes, then the mill for an easy 5 in 44 minutes. Was feeling pretty good so I went to the pool for 40 laps in 25 minutes.

It was the best I have felt in about a month. There is the 1/2 marathon in Hampton Beach this weekend that I have my eye on if things go well.

Sunday Fosty's Dash for a Cure

Well I finally got back to some running today after by far my least productive week.

The scene was Atkinson Country Club for The 4th Annual Frosty's Dash for a Cure.

I have been under the weather and not been running since Tuesday(even spent 1/2 day at the ER nothing serious just had to have some tests to make sure), so after seeing this race was going to be my best chance to get a snowshoe race under my belt. So at 8am I made my way to Atkinson NH which is just north of Haverhill, MA where I ran last Sunday. The temperature was in the 40's when I left so was not sure what I was getting myself into.

Well I got registered and I was just about the 1st person there at 9am. So I grabbed the Dion 121 and I went to get ready.

By 10am I was out on the course and did the 5k course that we would be running at 11:15am. I took it real slow at the beginning but went the distance in about 40minutes with a stop to eat and take the above picture and enjoy the day.

Made the mistake of going back inside but did not want to stay outside in my now soaking wet feet. So I made some clothing adjustments and headed back out to just make the start. The winner was Jim Johnson and can read his winning ways here.

I finished 30th place overall in 33:11. Results. Not bad considering my week. I was running behind one of the coaches for Trifury her name is Sharon Johnson but she took a spill about 1 mile in so I was able to pass her she ended up right behind me in 31st, winning her age group so I think I did OK.

Wow, I got a deep tissue massge !

At the urging of my MVS coach I went and got a deep tissue sports massage today.

I have been resting my hamstring this week I have almost no pain today so I was driving by a Zen Massage place and they had an opening at 6 pm.

I took it as a sign from the marathon higher-ups that it was meant to be.

And boy I was rewarded with a most blissful hour.

I had visions of running today as this week other than Sunday has been very light. Tuesday night at AHS indoor track I just never felt right and everyone else was going for an all-out mile that was not for me. So after 1 mile warm-up, I was told I was going to be doing .5 mile in 3:30. I gave it a go and the first one I did at 4:10 and felt like there was no way I was going to do better so I just did another and it only got worse. So I did a 2 mile cooldown and called it a night.

On Wednesday I did get on the bike for 45 minutes and did 15 miles before I called that a night because I was going to the Annual Awards Night for my running club the Merrimack Valley Striders. The only picture I found was of Will Merideth who won for Strider of the Year. Here is his picture:

I had a great time and even spent some time with fellow blogger JJ.

Thursday - 5 miles on local streets in 50 min.
Wednesday - rest.
Tuesday - 7 miles at AHS indoor track in 60 min.

Not too bad considering the injury.
Also wanted to note the hosted run went well even tho it averaged 8:45 it was encouraging as was able to get below 8min/mile for 4 miles near the end.
Month of January total miles was 183.

The Week that was mostly rest

Well I did get to track on Tuesday. I received several emails from Coach Annie telling me how to help out the hamstring, so I decided to speak to her directly.
The workout: (track I run at is 11 laps to the mile )

1. Warm-up 1 mile
2. 4x4 laps at 44 sec a lap 60 sec rest after each 4
3. 1 lap jog
4. 4 laps at 42 sec a lap 1 lap jog
5. 3 laps at 42 sec a lap 1 lap jog
6. 2 laps at 42 sec a lap 1 lap jog
7. 1 lap at 40 sec a lap 30 sec rest
8. Repeat 4-7
9. 1 mile at 7:45
10. 1 mile in 9:00 cool down

7 miles in 60 minutes not bad considering.
Annie instructed me on how to use a foam roller and I was told to take Wednesday off.

So like a good student I took Wednesday off did 5 miles after work on Thursday I did this on the road on some slippery roads so even though it was 50 minutes it was pain free and did not fall.

Friday it was back to BSC where I swam for 1.5 miles in 1 hour, nautilus 1 hour then 1.5 hours on the stair climber for 10 miles.

Today will be some core and swim.

Thanks SFrunner the weather looks better already as does the hamstring.

Week 6 Recap

Well I really cut back the miles as hamstring has been worse than originally thought it was a cramp but actually was more like a strain as still will not fully healed and it has been almost a week. Not sure I can do track tonight.

Saturday Swim and Cross Training

Today went to BSC twice once in the morning to pump some iron and see how the hammy was doing. It was painful anytime I went above 6 mph, so I backed off after 2 miles in about 25 minutes. Hit the bike for 40 minutes and an easy 12 miles.

Went to several stores and then back at 6pm for another 1.25 mile swim not too bad, 3 miles swam last 2 days. The reason I went back as I am scheduled for 15 miles tomorrow and wanted to get in the whirlpool and steam. It helped, also put a wrap on my thigh that seemed to help with the pain.

Will have to see how far I can get on the long run. It is a 5 mile loop, so I could easily cut it short if need be.

Finally lost the Holiday weight

Good news with the workouts of the past few days have finally got back to 170lbs.
Here they are:

Wednesday was nursing a sore hamstring so I did 1 mile in the pool, some light weights and called it a night.

Thursday started in the pool 1 mile then I tried the treadmill for 1/2 mile but the hammy was still not right so I went to the elliptical but had to go with the bike for a good 27 miles in 1:20.

Friday I was feeling good in the water also did not have to share the lane and was able to swim 1.5 miles in just under an hour. 116 laps in 1 hour to be exact was actually holding under 1 min. per 50 yards until 100 the I lost focus.

After the swim hit the stair climber did 11+ miles in 1:25. Was really working up a good sweat with that effort also was no pain in the hamstring just a little tight.
Learned my lesson last week and stayed out of the whirlpool hit the steamer and a nice hot shower.

Been checking the scale on Saturday morning and was rewarded with results after a good few weeks at BSC.

The plan this weekend is some weights and short run today as there is a hosted run in Stoneham tomorrow and will shoot for 15.

Falling Behind

This is how I felt today at track. It was taken Suday as we approached the final hill and I was out of gas, just like today. The workout was not that hard but after posting the recap I am in need of a day off which will come tommorrow all I will do is swim and some light weights.
The workout: (track I run at is 11 laps to the mile )

1. Warm-up 3 miles.
2. 4x3 laps at 35 sec a lap 1/2 lap jog, 3min rest after 4th
3. 4x3 laps at 34 sec a lap 1/2 lap jog, 3min rest after 4th
4. 4x2 laps at 33 sec a lap 1/2 lap jog,3min rest after 4th
5. 4x1 lap at 32 sec a lap 1/2 lap jog,3min rest after 4th
6. 5.5 laps at 38 sec a lap = 1/2 mile in 3:30
7. Cool down 1 mile

I really felt like trash tonight tighten up my hamsting during last set of 32 sec a lap and had to cut short #6 was supposed to be 1 mile and cool down is usually longer. But now I know why really need to cut back a tad.

Week 5 Recap

Monday - 7 miles on treadmill in 70 min. swim 1 mile in 50 min.
Sunday - 14 miles on snowy hosted run 2 hours 15 min.

If it's Sunday it must be Snowing-more pictures

If it's Sunday it must be Snowing

Or it just seems that way so far this year our running club was having their 2nd hosted run in as many weeks and I did not go last week because of the snow so I committed myself on Thursday telling the host I would be there. Here we are all nice and dry before running. I will add more pictures later but I did run 14 miles in just over 2 hours but was real tough sledding so to speak.

I ran with 3 other Boston Marathon hopefuls and I was the slowest of this group of 4 but did learn allot today as 1 of the runners has been in 32 consecutive Boston Marathons.

Last few days wrap up

It has been a long week training for what now will be My First Boston Marathon.

Wednesday I had a meeting run until 8pm. So I went to BSC for a quick workout but did ride the bike for 45 minutes it was going to be less but the Celtic game was good. Did 15 miles.

Thursday back into the water for a very long 1 mile had no energy but got tru it.Hit the dreadmill and did 10 miles in 82 minutes even had the grade at 1 for the first 6 miles at the suggestion of a teammate kept pace at or below 8min/mile for 8 of the 10 miles. The only drawback was I forgot my running shoes and ran in my lightweight trail shoes and got a huge blister.

Friday started with nautilus for 1 hour then did stairs for 72 min said I did 9+ miles and some 450 flights felt like more but will call it 9. Then I felt like doing some swimming and that was not a good idea after 1/2 mile I cramped up thought I was going to drown, but got hold of the lane rope and pulled myself in. Then I went into the whirlpool another bonehead move I thought this would help my cramp it did get rid of my calf but then my quad tightened so bad I almost fainted from the pain. Note to self do not do that again. Anyway live and learn.

Not sure about the weekend with snow for Sunday again. I am thinking of giving snowshoeing a try not sure if I should as my knees already have been bothering me this week. Also suppose to go to a hosted run in North Andover on Sunday they are always fun but not sure of the weather.

Week 4 Recap

On Saturday I did a run outside on the bikepath from Lexington to Cambridge and back.

The last time I did this was about 2 weeks ago, and the path was good to run on. This time there was allot of ice especially the end near Lexington. Once you get past the Arlington HS it was not too bad. Did 9 miles in 80 minutes.

Monday - 8 miles on treadmill in 70 min. swim 1.25 miles in 1 hour.
Sunday - rest
Saturday - 9 miles on bikepath in 80 min.
Friday - 5 miles on stair climber in 40 min. swim 1.5 miles in 1 hour 10 min.
Thursday - 11 miles on treadmill in 85 min. swim 1 mile in 45min.
Wednesday - rest. swim 1 mile in 50 min.
Tuesday - 9 miles at AHS in 80 min.
Total: 42 miles in just under 6 hours about 8.5 Min/mile.

That was a good week I swam almost 5 miles in my first week in the pool I just wanted to get my arms used to the motion I might try doing faster laps in the future but for now I just try to plug along doing 100 yards in 2 min.take a few breaths the do that for an hour. I used to swim 100 yards in under a minute, when I was a teenager. That was back in the 70's.

Oh well I do have some good news regarding running to Boston in April but I will wait till I get confirmation lets just say I sent an envelope to Hopkinton today.

Wow! What a difference a week makes!

Was pleasantly rewarded today with a great workout at BSC. OK great is probably a little to strong but that's how I feel after doing 110 laps in just over an hour.

Followed that up with some fruit shake I had with me and a power bar.

Then off to the Nautilus for 3 sets on 10 different muscle groups.

Then went to the stair master and did 4 miles in 31 minutes this week compared to 40 last week that is the good thing about this blog I would not have any record of this in the past. I digress.

Came home ate a bagel and a few light snacks and my "secret" weapon against muscle pain. Yogi Tea I mixed ginger and Super anti-oxidant green tea its no wonder I do not sleep much.

Thursday

Went to BSC again today. Started in the pool I found that best to get the laps in first yesterday did a mile, then some nautilus and core. Today looking to be done in 2 hours, went with 40 laps in about 45 minutes then hit the treadmill for a brisk 11 miles in 1:25. So much for being done in 2 hours. I was able to be out the door at 8:30 that is the earliest this week.

Week 3 Recap

Went to BSC today, after taking Sunday totaly off all I did was watch football and basketball and relax.

I started in the pool and did 80 laps which at 25 yards a lap works out to just over a mile. My time was about 50 minutes so I am still getting my arms used to the motion. My best 300 was just over 6 minutes. Michael Phelps need not worry about me.

1 hour was spent on assorted machines working all major muscle groups.
Even spent some time with a personal trainer gave me some tips for my gut which even with all the miles this week is going in the wrong direction. I did chech in with Mr. Scale and I came in at 172lbs. Which is only 2 more than when I ran the marathon in October. This was one of my highest miles of the year. So if I can keep up the swimming and other stuff during regular work weeks only time will tell.

Monday - 8 miles on treadmill in 70 min.
Sunday - rest
Saturday - 16 miles on tradmill in 130 min.
Friday - 4 miles on stair climber in 40 min.
Thursday - 12 miles on treadmill and elliptical in 105 min.
Wednesday - rest.
Tuesday - 10 miles on 3 different treadmills in 88 min.

That works out to 50 miles in 7 hr 13 min. 8:40/mile.
Which is ok for me as I am working to get my marathon pace which is about 8min./mile

I have to give a thanks to doublej for adding me to his list of blogs.
I checked out his video of the Hangover Race at Salsbury Beach looked mighty cold.
I am looking into getting a video camera so I can add some like the one I did last week. What I have currently is the one with this laptop.

Oh well something else to add to the list.

Stayed indoors mostly to get a better workout and it was 16 miles in 2:10 the first 1.5 was warmup as was last 1.5 I timed a 1/2 marathon in 1:42 even did a 7 minute mile at the end to finish the last 5 miles in 37:00. I did have on lowest incline during first 5 in 40.

Happy New Year

Well 2009 is here just another Thursday for me, except no work.

Nothing doing Wednesday as far as running anyway. Went to BSC after work got out at 2pm. Another 6" of snow. Did a core workout and some Nautilus for an hour then did 30 minutes on the bike just to get the blood moving.

Today it was 8 degrees was going to do 10 on local roads but decided to head to BSC and do the mill inside. So I did 1 hour on an elliptical (knee was sore). Then did the mill for 45 more minutes. Even went below 8min/mile for the last few miles. Total for the day was 7 and 5 I do not trust the mileage on the elliptical but if anything it was low because I was really working up a sweat. But will say 12 miles today in 105 minutes.
